The best way to begin a yoga practice is to
- Get the Equipment: The basic equipment needed to start a yoga practice is a yoga mat. Some other great props to add for beginners are blocks, straps, a blanket, and one of my favorites a round bolster.
- Set the Space: Creating a space that is intended for peace and gentle movements will allow you to relax. Hard floors will benefit your joints and allowing yourself the ample room to easily flow into poses will make you feel comfortable. The key is to make yourself feel at ease, so decorate as you like! I like a space with a lot of natural sun light, plants, water fountain, candles, and a speaker for music.
- Find your favorite teacher/app/studio: We all have different wants and needs. Finding someone that presents yoga to you in a way that speaks to your soul, is special. It is important to have resources to help in your yoga journey. Don’t be afraid to search, find, and try many yoga resources to help meet your needs. Over time you will learn more about yourself and your body. Exploring poses and sequences can help you learn how your body is responding to the movements. So the more you practice the more you will learn.
- Journal: Keep a journal of your practice. Write things that inspire you to keep practicing, expand your knowledge or maybe a sequence or pose that really speaks to you. Your journal can help guide you through your healing. Be sure to listen to what you have to say.
